Before Pearl Harbor: Basic Training in Fort Jackson, SC
Description
An account of the resource
The 56th Signal Battalion was stationed at Fort Jackson, SC for basic training and participated in the Carolina Maneuvers of 1941 with encampments in the area of Chester and Kershaw. Military Training for these May 1941 Selective Service "Citizen Draftees" was a strange adjustment and limited with outdated military equipment, wire placing and communications technology. Field wire and field telephones along with Morse code made up the extent of the contact between practice battle units.Shortly after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii the Battalion was dispatched to Europe, in July 1942, to prepare for the allied Air assault and the landings on the coast of France. It would be three long years before most of the Battalion members would return home to the USA, at the end of the European War.

Description
An account of the resource
My personal Wartime history taken from my snapshot album after the Normandy D-Day initial beach assault, to the end of hostilities. Each one has a precious memory for me and it is my wish to share these few historical photgraphs with you. My Unit, the 56th Signal Battalion, was directed to participate in the June 6, 1944 DDay amphibious operation NEPTUNE at Omaha Beach, Normandy with the assigned mission of providing communications for V Corps of the First United States Army prior to, during and after the Normandy amphibious phase of the June 6, 1944 operations as well as during the following campaign on the continent. The organization was divided into several detachments in order to provide communications for the various echelons as desired by the Commanding General. Detachments were organized on or about 21 April 1944 at Norton Manor Camp, near Taunton, England, as directed by the Battalion Commander and in accordance with plans developed with the different staff sections of V Corps Headquarters of the United States First Army under the direction of Lt. General Omar N. Bradley.
We were not allowed to take images during the invasion, so the photos begin once settled a few miles off the Normandy Beaches.

A Pair of Shoes at Buchenwald
Description
An account of the resource
In April 1945, as the gates and confines of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Germany were thrown open, inmates and refugees streamed about the area, heading in all directions, without caring where the roads led, as long as they were away. These unfortunate or perhaps fortunate ones that survived were badly in need of shoes for the long journey to "anywhere & somewhere". As we passed by, I gave this one a spare pair that I had in my bag and he at once put them on without caring for style, size or fit. His ragged ill fitting clothes were all the wordly goods he posessed. I somehow knew, wherever home was, he was heading there. The grateful look on his face as he stood up in his newly gained footwear expressed the thanks that his words and tears were not able to give. Behind him, almost mirrorlike, another shoeless one also gets his chance to try on his pair own of gifted American shoes.

1944 - D Day through Europe
